If you have the means get dirt rally, it’s great (many of you PC gamers already know this). I’ve only played the preview events because it still hasn’t fully installed but I’m already loving it.

Arggghh I need it. I want it. My body is ready. My wallet is too.

You might want to clarify that it’s only fun if you have a wheel and/or enjoy throwing your controller. I bought it, started playing, and then immediately regretted my purchase.

I’m having no problems playing with a controller with all assists off.

I’m not sure about trackmania wish I’d caught the open beta so I could’ve tried it out.

It’s like Trials but cars.

I hate it with a passion. I haven’t rallied per say, but I do have hundreds of miles of driving sideways quickly through a field. It isn’t impossibly difficuly to do, like the game is.

It will punish you for getting it wrong but I enjoy a challenge. Listening to the codriver and turning early helps.

Pretty much this. Sometimes they throw in rallycross.

Yep. For the occasional rallycross event, just the times from the final race are compared

I made each event two weeks long

According to pro rally competitors (including this mad bastard) DiRT Rally is as close to the real thing as you can get without an actual car. The physics are supposedly almost dead on, as is the way you have to drive the car if you want to be fast.

It’s probably just me using a controller then. It is vague and unresponsive. I hit the stick, it delays, I head toward a wall, then it turns.

Delayed response does sound like a controller issue. Or a system issue. Are you playing on a PC? If so it might not quite be up to the task of running the game smoothly.
I will say while the delayed response thing isn’t normal, it
is
an incredibly difficult and unforgiving game. Like real rally it takes a ton of practice to be able to go fast without stuffing it, but unlike real rally you don’t get the full feel of how fast you’re actually going, what the car is doing, and how hard you can brake before the car loses traction, so when you start off there’s a lot of overcooking corners or just totally botching the lines.
